title Fantasy Coffin: Bury Me Upside Downdate September, 2008 description My casket is my final self-portrait designed to position my body upside down. I subscribe to Easy E’s lyrics, “when i die, bury me upside down so the whole world can kiss my ass.”
Fantasy Coffins are custom made coffins from Ghana. Invented by carpenter Ata Owoo who designed an airplane coffin for his grandmother who died before ever achieving the fantasy of traveling by plane. This 50-year-old tradition has produced coffins of many varieties, usually objects that reflects the deceased favorite vice or occupation. The current trend of Fantasy Coffins now produce coffins using the occupation of the deceased. Eternalized is one’s class status as a final portrait, thus losing its original intent of a last wish fulfilled. The heavens are a false promise, a lie told to accept a life of struggle. |
